The Tide is Turning: Maya Angelou Poem

(picture from TumBLR)

We lost a rare and super woman a few days ago, Maya Angelou - the great writer of our entire
G E N E R A T I O N left us and now a new generation is beginning. When I was in Jr. High, I first learned of this amazing mind that walked among us here on Earth. I knew, even at 12 years of age, that she was a force to be reckoned with. In high school, I would sneak away from my house to the Borders (I liked to pretend I was an intellectual at 14), and I'd read her poetry for hours. Her words made me laugh and cry, and sometimes it made me reflect on my life. She taught me to be proud for being a woman. My life was deeply touched by Maya Angelou, and I am saddened by her passing. But she was a happy woman, and I can see her now with a huge smile on her face.

The sun has come.

The mist has gone.
We see in the distance...
our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out of time.
When the first stone looked up at the blazing sun
and the first tree struggled up from the forest floor
I had always loved you more.
You freed your braids...
gave your hair to the breeze.
It hummed like a hive of honey bees.
I reached in the mass for the sweet honey comb there....
Mmmm...God how I love your hair.
You saw me bludgeoned by circumstance.
Lost, injured, hurt by chance.
I screamed to the heavens....loudly screamed....
Trying to change our nightmares into dreams...
The sun has come.
The mist has gone.
We see in the distance our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out
in and out
in and out
of time.
-MAYA ANGELOU
